About Rivertown Revival

About Rivertown Revival

Heritage, High-jinks and A Hootenanny

Once again Friends of the Petaluma River bring you Rivertown Revival;  A festival to celebrate our town, community and river.  We will have music, art boat races, delicious local food, beer, creative vendors, a large play area for kids and kids at heart, interactive art and more.

Every year we are dedicated to creating an unforgettable and eco-friendly event decorated with re-used, re-cycled and re-purposed materials as much as possible.  We love to turn trash into treasure!

Please join us dressed as yourself or any zany, odd, beautiful, ugly or avant-garde character you see fit.  We love how your presence and creativity add to our event. See you there!

Rivertown Revival is a Benefit for Friends of the Petaluma River (FOPR).  A local non-profit dedicated to celebrating, conserving and educating the community about the Petaluma River and it’s watershed.  Throughout the year FOPR hosts river clean ups, free boating on sundays, a nature camp for kids, barn dances and more.  In 2014 FOPR implemented a Watershed Classroom Program which enables teachers throughout Petaluma City Schools to teach common core curriculum through the lens of our river and watershed.  Please stop by our tent at Rivertown Revival to learn more about us.

The Rivertown Revival will take place on the McNear Peninsula, through the entrance of Steamer Landing Park, at D Street & Copeland St near the Petaluma River in beautiful Petaluma.

Lodging and Weekend Activities

We encourage out-of-town guests and bridal parties taking advantage of our fabulous wedding pavilion to stay in Petaluma.  For lodging, we encourage you to click over to the Visit Petaluma Lodging Page.

Sculpture Walk

Rivertown Revival features all kinds of art! Since the beginning of this event, we have invited Sonoma County’s sculptors to bring their large works to the greet the public as they enter. Along the promenade and floating in the slough you will be delighted by art in surprising places. All art is available for barter.

Eco-Consciousness: Water and Waste

Please bring your own drinking container to the Rivertown Revival, as we are dedicated to creating a low-impact event within our beautiful peninsula and river environment. There will be limited disposables available at the event, and you will notice ample recycling and composting bins throughout. Please help us preserve the peninsula and keep our event waste-free.

We heartily encourage bicycling or walking to the Revival, however limited parking will be available off of D Street between the bridge and Lakeville Highway.

Bicycle Valet

A free Bicycle Valet organized by Bici Sport will be set at Steamer Landing Park.

We love animals, but our livestock and food vendors are wary. It's also always quite hot in July, so please keep your dogs, cats, birds, and fish at home.  (We’re ok with snakes as body art.)

Food and Beverage

A bounty of food vendors will be on site to tempt you with local goodies- save room for lunch, dessert, and more while supporting your local purveyors.

We’re choosing the most unique local vendors to display their crafts at the Revival. We encourage you to support the many wares that will be available.

Grand Art Boat Regatta

The Boat Regatta is part of a whole slew of fun happening on the water at the Revival, to include:

  • The Grand RR Flotilla
  • The Race Around the Slough
  • Art Boat builders "meet and greet" with an adoring public
  • Breaking for music at the Barn Stage
  • Trophy Presentations

Trophy Presentations

  • Competitive judging occurs during The Grand RR Flotilla and the Race Around the Slough.
  • Wow our judges with your artistic and engineering brilliance and participate in a lap around our race course!
  • Our local celebrity judges will hand out trophies for "River Beauty Award" and "River Speedy Award."

Race Rules, Information, and Random Facts

  • We welcome any decorated boat to join the fun! Any “green” powered (human, paddle, or green energy) decorated boat can join the Grand RR Flotilla and Race Around the Slough.
  • In the true spirit of the race, be inventive, artistic, and outrageous in your design. Just make sure your vessel will float!
  • You must be sober. That means no alcohol or drugs will influence you or your vessel’s behavior.
  • Tides, wind and wakes are to be reckoned with. Wind picks up in the afternoon (good for sails, hard for paddlers)
  • We strongly recommend that you launch your boat on Friday 7/15/16 to ease logistics and avoid low tide.
  • Your vessel is your responsibility not the Rivertown Revival’s; keep an eye on her. Your vessel entry number must be visible and placed on the front of your craft.
  • It is the team’s responsibility to remove any vestiges of vessel and crew by 3PM on Sunday 7/17/16.

Human Powered Boat Rules:

  • We welcome peddle powered, paddle powered, or otherwise human powered vessels.
  • There are no restrictions on boat size.
  • Themes and costumes are encouraged!
  • PFDs (Personal Flotation Devices) are highly encouraged and mandatory if a crew member is under the age of 16.
  • A bucket or pump must be on board if there is ANY chance your vessel might sink.
  • All vessels must have an anchored hook for retrieval and towing purposes.

Green Energy Boat Rules:

  • No internal combustion engines allowed regardless of fuel type.
  • Electric powered craft are limited to 18 volts max output of battery source. No off the shelf electric outboards, unless modified. For example, control unit must be separated from motor prop unit and mounted as two separate units.
  • If your power is steam, your fuel must be alcohol (but not to drink!)
  • Drive systems can be prop, air jet, water jet, water or air wheel, rubber band, or any other creative means of propulsion, as long as all other rules are followed.
  • Physical length must remain 18’ or less.
  • It must be an art boat and look amazing!
  • A working, small fire extinguisher must be on the craft if there is ANY chance your boat might catch fire.
  • A bucket or pump must also be part of the craft if you have a boat that might sink.
  • All vessels must have an anchored hook for retrieval and towing purposes.
  • PFDs (Personal Flotation Devices) are highly encouraged and mandatory if a crew member is under the age of 16.

Rivertown Revival Kids Area play faire

Rivertown Revival Kids Area play faire

calling all young River Rats

Rivertown Revival will once again host a bustling Kids' Area for our wee ones to create treasures, view and pet animals, dance to music, play with water, and engage in group art. We'll also have a Parents' Tent hosted by the Petaluma Mothers' Club, for mothers and fathers who want privacy for nursing or a shady place to re-group and change a diaper.

The Kids' Area, like the rest of the festival, is dedicated to using recyclable materials and easily found objects as much as possible. We aspire to engage children in play that harkens back to a time when play was not something one found in a store, but rather a natural state of being evoked through simplicity, joy and imagination.
