Like hotcakes themselves, the music Spike’s Awesome Hotcakes plays goes by many names. Soul. Swing. Rhythm & Blues. Jazz. Jump. It’s a sound that’s classic and simple, but when it’s done right, it hits the spot, and has you grinning from ear to ear.
Born in Oakland, California, Arann was raised on a steady diet of backyard chickens, rabbits, and golden-age hip hop—Run DMC, Too Short, and the Beastie Boys always playing in the background. A country boy at heart, his exuberance and ever-present “outside voice” didn’t quite suit the indoor life of the city.
In search of space to match his big energy and larger-than-life frame, Arann left Oakland and set off to explore the world—farming, rafting, skiing, and teaching along the way. Eventually, he found his way back to his roots in his father’s hometown of rural Petaluma, California. There, on the family farm, he raised sheep for wool to sell at local farmers markets, spending most nights in a converted barn playing guitar and writing songs.
Arann’s distinctive voice was honed at countless campfires, hole-in-the-wall bars, and coffeehouses across the country. His lyrics read like a travel journal—full of stories about farming, animals, food, friends, and a style of life he calls “dirtbag wine-country livin’.” Still, the echoes of his Oakland upbringing remain woven into every chord, offering a bridge between the beat-heavy energy of hip hop and the soul of American folk.
